The Integrated Care Board has a fixed budget from the government to pay for NHS healthcare for everyone in Hertfordshire and west Essex. Our job is to spend this money wisely and pay for medicines and treatments that provide the greatest benefit to patients
Most of our budget is allocated to various healthcare providers such as GPs, hospitals and community services (including mental health) to meet the healthcare needs of people living in our area.
Unfortunately, there is not enough money to fund every possible operation, procedure, or medicine for everyone. We have to make difficult decisions about which treatments can be paid for by the NHS and which treatments can’t.
We have treatment policies to guide us in making these choices in a way which is impartial, consistent, and fair.
