There are lots of things you can do to keep healthy and well. Looking after yourself means you might prevent things getting worse and needing medical help as well. Also, lots of common illnesses and injuries are easy to treat at home if you know what to do.
Keep your medicine cabinet well stocked
Painkillers such as paracetamol, ibuprofen or aspirin can help with self-care, relieving symptoms of cold or flu. There are liquid versions of paracetamol and ibuprofen for children. Always read the dosage instructions.
It’s also good to have remedies like:
- cough medicines and throat lozenges
- anti-diarrhoea tablets (not for children under 12) and oral rehydration salts for stomach troubles
- antihistamines for allergies and skin itchiness
- antacid for symptoms of heartburn and indigestion
- a digital thermometer to accurately measure fever, particularly in a baby or child.
Speak to your local pharmacy if you are unsure about any of these medications.
You don’t have to spend a lot to be prepared to self-care. You can buy leading brands or you can buy non-branded ‘generic’ versions of medicines. These work just as effectively – your local supermarket or discount store will have options available.
Don’t forget to check the instructions and expiry before using any medicines, and never take more than the stated dose. If any medicines are out of date, take them to your local pharmacy so they can be disposed of safely.
Access non-urgent health advice
Visit the NHS website or use the NHS App
If you’re unsure where to start, the NHS.uk website has a health A-Z. It is an expert-reviewed complete guide to conditions, symptoms and treatments, including what to do and when to get help. You can also use the search function on that website to look up information about your symptoms or condition.
You can also use the NHS App to access healthcare advice and service information. You don’t have to download the app to use this service – you can use the web browser.
Visit your pharmacist
If you need non-urgent health advice, your local pharmacist can help you – no appointment needed. They are your health professionals on the high street who can recommend treatments for minor health conditions such as coughs, colds, sore throats and childhood fever.
